Cake Pops fit for a Rock Star Princess

Ms. Bakerella is celebrating her four year cakepop-iversary. Have you ever made cake pops? They are the cutest addition to any party.

Last year Ms. Paperlicious made cake pops for her twins Rock star Princess birthday party . While I don't fancy myself a baker. At. All. It was fun to try. I found the cute little princess papers to add to the pops at Michaels. The kids sure seem to love them.

Their birthday is in early Spring, but they wanted a swimming party. SO... we rented a hotel room at the local Holiday Inn that has an indoor pool. you know, so we could party like rock stars. WOW was it a fun time for those kids. We did it after school one day so the hotel was not busy at all and we had the pool all to ourselves. Then we had snacks and cake in the hotel room. The closest they got to trashing the hotel room was jumping on the bed. A lot. That might have been their favorite part!

We chose the Rocker Princess Party Invitations. Although a these fun swim party invitations would have worked too.

Our party favors were beach pails filled with fun rock star gear like sunglasses, sparkly jewelry and lip gloss. I think I made some All Access Pass Laminates too.

Valentine's Day Cookie Swap Party ideas

So about four years before Paula Deen had her popular Holiday Cookie Swap Party special on the Food Network, my friend Stacy did a Valentine's Day Cookie Swap Party. In Georgia. I guess Paula must have heard how fantabulous it was through the peachvine (I made that up!).

Anyhow, we were inspired this year to do a fun Valentine's Day Cookie Swap Party invitation, mainly because we wish we had thrown a Christmas cookie swap party, since Ms Paperlicious can't bake to save her keester. Don't get me wrong, I lovvveee to mix up tasty batters and delicious frostings, but when it comes to the actual baking part of it, it's a total FAIL. I blame it on a mysterious convection oven and bad cookie sheets.

This would be a super cute invitation for a February bridal shower invitation, kids' Valentines birthday invitations or a sweet baby shower idea.

But if I had a Valentines cookie swap party, all of my baking troubles would be over, for a few days anyway!

And I will send them packing with a sweet little goodie bag using these round Valentine gift tags. Or maybe the rectangle Cookie Gift Tags?

Wait, does the host have to bring cookies to a cookie exchange party? Darn it all.

Make a rainy day bucket. We did this a while ago and it was a win for everyone. I took some old suitcases and gathered up all of the tiny toys- you know the kids meal, birthday party booty types- and put them in the suitcase and wrote "Rainy Day" on it. It only comes out on a rainy day. No more tiny toys under feet and the toys seem like new and it takes some of the rainy day blues away.

Tackle It Tuesday - Christmas Cards!

The plan was to do Halloween Photo Cards and beat the rush of Holiday Card mayhem. Then Halloween got busy. Then Thanksgiving, got well, thankful (and maybe a little Disney Worldish.) So here we are, a mere 13 days before Christmas and we still haven't done our own photo cards! And we sell them! And we have the printers right here. And our dear friend gave us the perfect photo she took that we can use. Oh dear.

So I got motivated by 5minutesformom.com to throw it in the Tackle It Tuesday hopper and voila- Christmas cards! Whew. Thanks for the motivation. We're going with these fun guitar holiday photo cards.

Holiday Photo Cards Tips

Lots of folks will be taking photos for their holiday photo cards and Christmas photo cards during the Thanksgiving holidays. Here's a few of our best tips for taking a great photo for your Christmas cards.

PHOTO TIPS:

1- Natural light and minimal background. Outdoor light is always brighter and whiter than indoor light, which can appear more yellow in photos
2- Wear bright solid colors
3- set your camera for the highest file size possible.
4- pay attention to shadows, especially on faces. Switch directions that you are sitting relative to lights to eliminate the shadows

We suggest a minimum resolution of 1200 x 1050 pixels and 300dpi. Only submit original images that HAVE NOT been cropped, edited, or altered in any way. Please note you cannot change a smaller 72 dpi photo to be 300dpi. The photo needs to be taken with these settings. This can be accomplished by adjusting the settings in your camera. Please see your camera's manual for how to do this.

The quality of the final cards depends largely on the quality of the digital photo. The best photos are those taken as a high-resolution image in natural light with very little shadows. Shadows and dark spots can print out as grainy on card stock, so we use glossy photo cards. Glossy hides a lot of flaws!

Please note that photos that may look good on a computer screen, may not look the same when printed. Computer screens are designed to display a max of 72dpi, so a photo taken with 72dpi will look good online because of the light coming through the monitor from behind the photo, but not as sharp when printed. This is why we suggest 300 dpi- 300 "dots per inch" allows for a lot more saturation than 72.

Green Tip: Easy Ways to Save Water

Water, water, everywhere.

Or not.

For most of us here in America, we turn on the water at will and use as much as we want without thinking about it running out. Ever.

But can you imagine not having clean water at all? Or having to walk three hours in dangerous terrain just for one drop?

That's the situation in many countries in Africa, and charity:water is trying to change it.

With the help of your donations, they are bringing wells and clean water to communities in Africa. Having clean water nearby means better health (it's hard to kill germs and grow crops without water), more economic opportunities (not to mention more time to pursue economic growth instead of walking for water!), and a safer environment for women and children (those walks are not exactly down a paved sidewalk in a nice neighborhood).

Can you imagine saying to your precious 8 year old child "honey, head out along that treacherous path and carry back 40 pounds of water on your little 55 pound body. Try not to get molested today by any men. See you three hours."

Let's hope that sounds like a horrific idea to you. Please help charity:water if you can.

Another way we can help those who don't have water is to conserve the water we are so blessed to have in abundance. Here's a few tips for conserving water that you can do right now, FOR FREE! And in a tight economy, a smaller water bill is a good thing too.

*Put a large bowl in your sink to catch the extra water from washing fruits or rinsing dishes without soap. Use this water to hydrate your house plants and garden
*Don't just pour "old" water that you are not going to drink down the drain. Water a plant with it.
*When washing dishes by hand, fill the sink and turn the water off.
*When you turn the water on, be mindful of how much you turn it on. For tasks like hand washing, a small stream works just as well as full blast.
*Teach your children to wet their hands, turn off the water and soap up. Then turn it on to rinse.
*Use the garbage disposal as little as possible. Compost vegetable food waste instead.
*Take shorter showers. Take it a step further and turn the water OFF while you soap up or wash your hair.
*Only run your washer and dishwasher when they are full
*Water your lawn in the mornings and evenings when it is cooler so more of it soaks in to the earth instead of evaporating with the heat of the sun

Green Tip Wednesday - Be a Flom.

This morning I received an email from a friend and former boss, Jason Flom. His father, the legendary lawyer Joseph Flom just passed away at 87. Prior to starting my custom invitations business, I worked for Jason for 9 years at a his record label, Lava Records, in New York City. While I only met Mr. Flom a few times, and I have not seen Jason in 5 years, I felt profoundly sad with this news.

I began to think about the amazing legacy Mr. Flom was leaving. How much Jason and his siblings looked up to their dad and mentor. How Mr. Flom, along with Jason's late mother Claire Flom, taught their children, and everyone else, that we all have the ability to not just give to others, but to inspire them.

If you do not know who Mr. Flom is, just google his name and you will quickly learn he is both a legal legend and a generous soul. His story of Ellis Island immigrant family to successful business man is inspiring in itself. But his giving spirit and philanthropic endeavors are awe-inspiring. What I love about much of his philanthropy is that Mr. Flom provided opportunities for others to excel.

And that apple did not fall far from the tree. Working for Jason was one of the greatest gifts I have received in my lifetime. Jason's parents taught him to leave the world better than how he found it. Jason in turned passes that on to everyone he meets. He never stops looking for ways to do good, for someone else. The fact that Jason is also crazy successful, and will be a legend in his own right, is not by chance.

But the thing is, we can all be a Flom. We don't have to live in New York City, or have a high profile job, or even a lot of money. We can all be a Flom just by doing one thing everyday to help someone else. Just start right where you are, right now.

Both Jason and his parents are proof that if you look outside of yourself to make the world better, you can and will be a success in your own life.

The depths to which Joe Flom will be missed will unravel in the days ahead, but my hope is that his unending impact on this world will comfort his family and friends.

If we just did one thing every day to help one person, no matter how small, just imagine the legacy we could all leave our children.

That's my green tip on this Wednesday. Go be a Flom.

Green Tip Thursday - Recycle for Rewards

Here at Paperlicious, we love recycling. That's why we used only 100% recycled fiber paper from a mill that supports sustainable forestry for all of our custom invitations and green stationery.

SO.... when Ms. Paperlicious was recently at a Rite Aid and noticed this fancy little kiosk outside the store, she went home and immediately googled said kiosk. Joy to behold! It was a can recycling center from greenopolis.com!

These cool little boxes allow you to recycled your aluminum cans and plastic bottles for rewards and even charitable donations. Double good!

Ms. Paperlicious popped over to their sign-up page and registered in about 1 minute. You can create a profile, even blog about your recycling. There's a search box where you can input your zip code and find your nearest box.

The rewards work on a point system for participation on the website plus what you recycle at the kiosks. Ms. Paperlicious used to work at a record label. With Kid Rock. Really, she did!

And she worked at said record label with a smart savvy business woman named Angela McLain, who has now started her own company, Type A, Inc.

Angela is one of of those people that, we think, was sort of born knowing everything. Do you have any friends like that? We're not talking about a know-it-all kind of attitude. Throwing a Hollywood themed shindig for your next birthday party? Here's a few ideas to make sure it's an A-list gathering.

Green Tip Thursday - Where do I recycle that?

Have you ever wondered where you should recycle your fancy mercury containing light bulbs (compact flourescent lights or CFLs)? Ms. Paperlicious was wondering the same thing recently and boy was she happy to learn that Home Depot, Lowe's and Ikea will all take the bulbs. That's a lot easier than visiting the dump or an out-of-the-way recycling center.

What about batteries. Or pesticide containers? Or Christmas trees? Just visit www.earth911.com, put in what you want to recycled plus the city and click "search" and voila! Your answer comes up. Sweet!

Party Tip Tuesday- Little Chefs Cooking Party!

Sometimes, the best kid's birthday party ideas are the most simple themes that happen right at your own home. What great memories for your child to look around their house every day and remember what fun they had with their special friends and family. And, it's way less expensive! Sure there's a little more clean-up, but maybe it's worth it for so many happy memories.

Here's a great party idea for younger kids that is big on creativity and easy on the budget. A Little Chefs Cooking Party!

Ms. Paperlicious' little beans were recently invited to a cooking party that they still talk about as being one of their favorites. The super-creative mom had all the details covered.

She chose these cute little cooking party invitations from Paperlicious:

First, the kids decorated their very own hot pink kid-sized aprons that she purchased at a craft store. She had fabric pens, puffy pain, paint brushes and stencils. The result is still a favorite play item in the toy kitchen!

Then they moved to the dining room where they decorated their own pizza with sauce, cheese, and toppings. She bought pre-made dough at the grocery store and rolled out little 5" rounds from the dough. Yum!

While the pizzas were cooking, the kids decorated their own cupcake with toppings like chocolate covered marshmallows, m&ms, and sugar hearts. Check out these stellar creations!

The best part was they got to look at their cupcakes while they gobbled up their pizza. A great way to motivate a kid to eat a few veggies!

As you can see, the theme was pink, pink and more pink. Easily a color you can find at any super-store or party store.

NEW FEATURE- Party Tip Tuesday

What's a party without a sweet and stellar beverage, be it just juicy or alcoholic too?

For your holiday gathering this year, Ms. Paperlicious has a timely tip that's sure to spice up your Thanksgiving or Christmas feast... The Signature Cocktail (or beverage)!

To serve your signature drinks and get everyone mixing and mingling, set up a little bar with the ingredients displayed. It can be as easy as a folding table covered with a white table clothe. Draw yourself a little sign with the name of your signature drink, and you are ready to go!

Here's a few ideas we came up with:

The Turkey Lurkey- Spiced Cranberry Juice (with ginger and cinnamon) and if you are so inclined (and over 21, please), add a little vodka. Tastes like a sweet tart sweet heart! Serve chilled in a fancy glass or coat the rim of a straight glass in green sugar granules for added flair. You can serve the non-alcoholic version of this warm too. We think it's delicious.

Frosty Friend- 3 parts club soda or lemon lime, 1 part milk and a one small spoon of vanilla ice cream. Add a little mint extract or Peppermint Schnapps. Shake and pour (slowly or the foam will take over!)

Muddy Reindeer - basically, hot chocolate served in a glass that has been drizzled inside with chocolate syrup. Over 21 version- add a little Baileys or Godiva liquer.

And that's just off the top of our heads! Think about what you are serving for your meal, and play off of those flavors.

We're not talking plain 'ol party punch here. Whatever your holiday theme, you can come up with a fun and feisty drink that will be the talk of the party.

Photo Tips & Guidelines:

UPLOAD YOUR PHOTO:

Upload your photo in JPEG or JPG file format. Do this by clicking “Browse” next to the upload option, select the photo from your computer, and click “open” or "attach". You will know your photo is uploaded if you received a green “Upload Successful” bar at the top of your monitor AFTER you add the design to your cart. The file name will also appear in the item description during checkout.

If you only have a TIF or EPS file, please email it with your order number to photos@paperlicious.com. Please do not upload a TIF or EPS file via the website. These files are extremely large and will have to be deleted immediately to avoid server issues.

PHOTO TIPS:

We suggest a minimum resolution of 1200 x 1050 pixels and 300dpi. Only submit original images that HAVE NOT been cropped, edited, or altered in any way. Please note you cannot change a smaller 72 dpi photo to be 300dpi. The photo needs to be taken with these settings. This can be accomplished by adjusting the settings in your camera. Please see your camera's manual for how to do this.

We will change color photos to black and white or sepia if that option is selected. It is not necessary to do this yourself first. We will touch-up blemishes, marks, and red eye, some brightness adjustment (limited by the resolution of the image), and color saturation. We cannot do major scratch removal, remove unwanted objects, or airbrush the photo.

The quality of the final cards depends largely on the quality of the digital photo. The best photos are those taken as a high-resolution image in natural light with very little shadows. Shadows and dark spots can print out as grainy on card stock.

Please note that photos that may look good on a computer screen, may not look the same when printed. Computer screens are designed to display a max of 72dpi, so a photo taken with 72dpi will look good online, but not as sharp when printed. This is why we suggest 300 dpi- 300 "dots per inch" allows for a lot more saturation than 72.

Your photo will be printed directly on our matte 100% recycled fiber paper, which is a bright white smooth 80lb cover stock. We do not use photo paper. The final photo sizes vary depending on the design chosen. Our designer may need to crop the photo to make it fit properly. You will see this in your proof.

Top 5 Party Tips for an A-List Gathering

So you are throwing a little (or big) soiree? You know you are going to stress over every detail- decorations, food, guest list…But have you thought about how you will promote your party?

“Promotion? For my little ‘ol neighborhood party? That sounds a little over the top.”

After all of the time, energy, and expense you are going to for your party, why not focus on a few inexpensive steps to throw the kind of party folks will have so much fun at, they'll be talking about it all year!?

As the former publicity maven and artist relations wrestler for a record label, ms. paperlicious has learned that there are a few main “promotion” staples to a great party, no matter what the occasion or who’s on the guest list.

So here’s my Top 5 Party Tips for an A-List Gathering:

5- Start with a creative fun invitation that suits the mood of your party. Sure you can dash off an email or do one of those online invites, but the paper invitation means serious party business! (Oh of course I'm biased- we're a custom printing stationery company!) Be witty with the wording. Go for memorable yet simple. And send it out 3-4 weeks before a large event, 2.5-3 weeks for a friendly gathering. The longer people have it on their calendar, the more likely it is that they will attend.

4- Reach for the stars. In the music industry, we used to wrangle the stars by enticing them with talk of fellow elite attending, and of course lots of great press via “the red carpet.” So decide who your “stars” are and make it a point to get them there. “Coworker Bob, I’m counting on you to wow my guests with your hilarious reparte!” And don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and invite a few new people you don’t know so well. You never know who is going to be the life of your next party!

3- Talk, talk, talk it up! A little old-fashioned party-promotion will create excitement. And excitement is contagious. So thrill would-be guests with your fantastic details. Tell the ladies you invited in your yoga class about the exquisite menu you just nailed down, tell the Bunco group about your amazing bar set-up, tell your single friends about all of the other cute single people attending…

2- It’s all in the details. Any party with a “signature drink” is always a crowd pleaser. Having a New York themed party? Serve a Big Apple Martini. Winter welcoming? A Muddy Snowflake at dessert (coffee & cream). Another quick tip-- Set up a “bar” anywhere but the kitchen (get out of the kitchen!), created from a simple card table with a table cloth draped over it. For some reason, ordering from a waist high table, um, “bar,” makes people feel really fancy. I swear. Even better if you can staff it with a "bartender" aka friend, babysitter, neighbor, etc. Divide up the time between buddies- entice them by telling them it's the best way to meet all the people at the party. Better yet, give the job to a shy friend so they meet lots of new people!

1- Send ‘em packin…with something good! It doesn’t have to be an expensive party favor, just something thoughtful and memorable. Intimate dinner party? Take a group photo and print it out on that new photo printer while everyone is having dessert. High-brow event? Vosges chocolates are gourmet and out of this world creative. Ever have a cumin truffle? People will be talking. Baby shower? Homemade tulle-wrapped drawer sachets/sea salt baths or a tiny bundle of fresh herbs from your garden are darling. Kids party? Let them scoop different colored M&Ms or Jelly Belly’s from the “candy bar” you set up. You can go to each company’s website and purchase separate colors/flavors.

There you have it! Put these tips together with your fun decorations, great food, and lots of friends and you have the makings for one happening shindig!

If part of your Halloween tradition is decorating pumpkins, why not make them a monster theme this year so you can set them out at the party. Paint them bright colors, use googly eyes, pipe cleaners and pom poms to make them more monster like and crazy!

We're going to do a few simple healthier snacks we know kids like, such as grapes, carrot sticks, and if it's a longer party, pizza. Or what about a build your own monster sandwich tray?

For drinks, a green monster party punch sounds perfectly simple. Sherbert, lime kool-aid (we're opting for the sugar free kind), fruit juice, club soda or sparkling water... done!

Do you know Bakerella? We love her. Not that we can duplicate a darn thing she does, but if we could, we'd totally make these little monster cake pops for our Monster Mash Halloween Party, but adapt them for colorful crazy monsters! Maybe we'll just do colorful cake pops and call it a day. I think we can handle that. Then we'll do colorful plates and napkins. It will be so bright and cheerful, the monsters won't know what hit 'em.

How does our new Guaranteed RUSH Order Status work?

Check the "Add a RUSH Order Status Guarantee" option on the invitation order page. A one-time, non-refundable per order charge of $9.95 will be added to your order total.
You will receive an email proof within 24 hours (M-F only). After you approve your proof, it will ship the next business day. Cut-off time for proof approval is 7pm EST for shipping the following business day.
If we fail to provide your RUSH proof or ship your order out the next business day after proof approval by 7pm EST, we will gladly upgrade your shipping method to Express Mail at no additional charge and refund your RUSH Status charge!
If you request changes to your proof, we will expedite these changes as quickly as possible; however this may delay your proof approval, and subsequently your shipping the following business day. We do not guarantee orders with requested changes will ship the next business day after you receive a proof, but rather the next business day after you APPROVE a proof.
Please note, a RUSH guarantee for orders placed on a Friday will mean a proof by Monday morning, and shipping by Tuesday (with an approved proof).
You choose your desired shipping method during check-out. Our standard shipping is Priority Mail 2-3. This is usually the most economical.
